The Heartland Cafe on ABC's The Hungry Hound

The Heartland Cafe: Selected as one of Time Out Chicago's
Essential
Restaurants in Chicago!!!!
The
Heartland is as much as a playground for twenty and
thirty-somethings as it is a restaurant. Local music acts
ranging from folk to rockabilly to
jazz flock to it's stage as frequently as the local art
on the walls changes.
Top billing, however, belongs to it's menu. To
the delight of vegans, vegetarians,
and the cholesterol conscious, organic whole wheat breads,
salad plates, setian dishes, and black bean burgers are
offered
but red meat seekers won't be dissapointed when the turkey
alternatives to
bacon and ham arrive plated next to their generously sized
omelettes.
The Red Line Tap: Selected as one of Time Out Chicago's
Essential
Bars in Chicago!!!!
Just around
the corner from the Heartland Cafe, this Rogers Park hang
out
wears many hats. On
any given night, the place could be packed with hippies,
punks, or hipsters, depending who's playing on the stage.
If you don't dig, say the bluegrass band wailing away, sidle
up to the
adjoining bar for a more laid back evening

The
Red Line Tap: Selected as one of Chicago Magazine's
top 100 bars in Chicago!!!!
This charmingly scruffy dive echoes the vibe of the
el line it flanks.
A laid-back neighborhood crowd drinks cheap beers over Galaga,
watches their cool indie friends play on a tiny stage,
and scrawls creative bathroom graffiti.
The beer list is better than you’d expect;
so is the Abe Lincoln portrait over the pool table.
Bonus points for live-band heavy-metal nights.
