Friends of the Heartland
Tom Lutzow: Tom was a big man with a big heart, whose loaves of whole wheat bread, classic cinnamon rolls, key lime pie, apple cobbler, carrot cake. and mixed berry pie were enjoyed by thousands over the years he served as head baker at the Heartland Café. Chuck Olin: Chuck was a filmmaker who worked on the classic Chicago documentaries American Revolution II and The Murder of Fred Hampton. P. Michael O’Sullivan: Michael was an award winning photojounalist. His book Patriot Graves documented the struggles in Belfast, Northern Ireland in the 70s. Carlos Cortez: Carlos was a Wobbly, poet, and printmaker. A remembrance of Carlos appears on page 10 of this issue. Jolie Christine Rickman: Jolie was a wonderful singer songwriter who graced the stages at the Heartland Café, the No Exit Café, and coffee houses and performance halls across the country. She performed benefits for many activist groups, and was on the front lines singing at protests against the military training facility known as the School of the Americas. Jane Pomeroy Luchenbach: Jane was an artist from Southern Illinois. On a number of occasions her colorful painting’s graced the walls of the Heartland Café.
