The Red Line Tap
Best Bars to Catch Mid Week Live Music - 2011

The Rogers Park joint formerly—and perhaps more famously—known as “Roy’s” received a revamp and a new name when it’s original owner, Roy Kawaguch, passed away in 1996. Now known as The Red Line Tap, this friendly neighborhood bar and sister establishment to the Heartland Cafe is home to a weekly open mic night, and brings in a range of genres throughout the week. Though the taproom books plenty
of alternative, singer-songwriter and roots style music, it has become
especially well-regarded for Heavy Metal and hard rock.

The Red Line Tap
Best Place to Drink on Pocket Change

On most nights of the week, this quiet Rogers Park dive offers a pool table, an indie band on a tiny stage, and the convenience of the adjacent train. But on Wednesday nights, the Red Line Tap explodes like a balloon filled with cheap beer. At just a dollar a pop on "Wasted Wednesdays," Miller High Life drafts lure hordes of students and other north-siders who don't want to spend more at the bar than they would on a load of laundry. You can even bring along friends with higher-brow tastes, who will be pleased to find Bell's and Goose Island seasonals on tap. —Sallyann Price

The Red Line Tap: Selected as one of Chicago Magazine's
top 100 bars in Chicago!!!!

This charmingly scruffy dive echoes the vibe of the el line it flanks.
A laid-back neighborhood crowd drinks cheap beers over Galaga,
watches their cool indie friends play on a tiny stage,
and scrawls creative bathroom graffiti.
The beer list is better than you’d expect;
so is the Abe Lincoln portrait over the pool table.
Bonus points for live-band heavy-metal nights.
